5/2/2006 | New Research Shows Parents Not Adequately Aware of the Risk of Drain Entrapment and Drowning
The new research shows only one third (34 percent) of parents with children aged 14 or under in the household recognize that drowning is one of the top two causes of accidental death among children, and that 66 percent are not at all or only somewhat familiar with the threat of drain entrapment and entanglement. Both of these findings are alarming because research reveals that pool and spa ownership is becoming more popular. More >

Safe Kids North Central Florida at Shands Children’s Hospital delivered its first Baby Expo, an exciting marketplace of family-oriented products and services, activities and entertainment celebrating every stage of childhood, from pregnancy to preschool. Parents and caregivers can make sure they’re choosing safe toys for their children by paying close attention to warning labels and manufacturer’s guidelines. “More than 3 billion toys and games are sold in the United States every year, and most of them are very safe. 11/16/2005 | Helmet Fitting at Talbot
Safe Kids North Central Florida provided 300 helmets to students at Talbot Elementary School in October at no charge thanks to a grant from Safe Kids Florida and the Florida Department of Transportation. More >
8/4/2005 | Law Enforcement Officers to Begin Ticketing Children
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (August 4, 2005) – In an effort to promote bicycle helmet use, Shands Safe Kids and area law enforcement officers will begin ticketing children they “catch” wearing their helmets on August 15. These tickets will be redeemable at Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream for a free cone or cup. More >
6/6/2005 | New ATV Safety Poster
Safe Kids North Central Florida launches an all terrain vehicle (ATV) safety campaign to discourage children under 16 from riding on these vehicles.
Since Oct. 1, 2004, five pediatric traumas have been seen at Shands Hospital as a result of riding on an ATV. In order to reduce these numbers, Safe Kids is starting a campaign to educate children and parents about the dangers of riding on an ATV.

3/28/2005 | SHANDS SAFE KIDS EDUCATES PARENTS AND CHILDREN
In observance of Child Passenger Safety Week, Shands Safe Kids held six events to educate parents and children about the importance of child passenger safety. These events included: Car seat checks in Gainesville, Lake City and Live Oak, Buckle Up Booths at Main St. Chevrolet and in the Shands Hospital Atrium and a car seat class at Alachua Day Care. At these six events, more than 53 car seats were checked or installed.
