Safe Kids continued to plan and implement an ongoing,
car safety program to mobilize those at risk to take action.
Safe Kids North Central Florida (Director - Debora Regan and CPS Educator - Morya Willis) presented an interactive presentation with safety tips, statistics and videos. This presentation is fast-paced, interactive and students are immediately drawn in to the fun and facts. This presentation is sombering and entertaining - making it possible to reach and educate the tween age group. “Students are amazed that so many children die from preventable injuries and why safety rules can save their lives,” commented Debora Regan.
Students learned about the top 6 injury categories and how they could not become a statistic. The top 6 injury categories are: vehicles, ATV’s, water sports, wheel sports, pedestrian and playground activities. Students were surprised to learn how many children have died from preventable injuries - especially here in Florida. Preventable injuries is the #1 killer of children ages 0-14 years of age. ATV injuries and fatalities are one of our highest injury/fatality categories.
Both students and teachers commented they learned a lot and didn’t know how dangerous summer could be.
3rd grade student – “Wow – I know several things I can do right away to be safer. It is easy to be safe!”
4th grade student – “I didn’t know it was the law to wear a bicycle helmet. I will wear my helmet this afternoon.”
6th grade – “It is so sad hundreds of children in Florida have died on ATVs. I learned 2 things I can do to save my life…and I am telling my friends too.”
