Bike Safety

Safe Kids continued to plan and implement an ongoing, bike safety program to mobilize those at risk to take action. Since June 2004, 2,681 bike helmets have been distributed and fitted. That is more than three times the number distributed last year. This includes 1117 helmets provided by a grant for all the elementary school children in Dixie County. The other helmets were distributed through the following organizations: City of Waldo, Gardian Ad Litem, Suwannee County Elementary and Primary Schools, Half Pints Learning Center, Alachua County Fire Rescue, Children’s Medical Services, Shands Hospital, Alachua County Elementary Schools, Hope for the Holidays, City of Gainesville and Kids Riding Bikes Haile Pediatrics. Safe Kids participated in a bike rodeo at Irby Elementary with 60 children participating and helmet fitting days at Talbot, Glen Springs, Prairie View, Loften and Terwilliger elementary schools.
