More than 97 events were held for our child passenger safety program since June 12, 2004, 30 percent more than the number from the previous year. This increase has been made possible by the hard work of the child passenger safety educator. More than 1,225 seats were distributed and 1,153 seats checked for correct installation during that same time period. In addition, 53 classes were held serving 686 participants increasing the total number of program participants to 1,999.
A special campaign was created for Child Passenger Safety Week featuring six events (3 car seat checks, 2 information booths and 1 class). TV spots and print ads were placed to run during the week. Also, a new partnership was established with Main Street Chevrolet. In addition, 1,000 local car seat brochures were distributed at classes, checkpoints, events, coalition meetings and by mail to area day car centers and Pediatricians’ offices. Car seat prescription pads were printed and distributed to 87 area pediatricians and obstetricians.

Transporting Children with Special Health Care Needs
Certain medical conditions and procedures can significantly impact a child’s ability to
tolerate proper positioning in conventional child restraint systems, thus requiring special
transportation considerations. 49 cases have been addressed since November of 2004 including
19 low birth weight and premature infants, 11 orthopedic conditions and procedures, 6
developmental delays, 4 neuromuscular conditions, 4 respiratory conditions, 3 behavioral
challenges and 2 gastrointestinal disorders. Special needs seats or vests were provided
to the families and the parents were taught how to correctly position the child in the
restraint and properly install the restraint in their vehicle for transportation.
