A safety fair is held for Safe Kids Week, our biggest event of the year. This year, we
moved the event to the downtown plaza and joined with another event, Kid Fest. Total
attendance at the event is estimated at more than 3,000 people. This is 10 times the
number of attendees at last year’s event. Alachua County Fire Rescue offered educational
performances by Patches, the talking, singing fire dog, Safe Kids used a prize wheel and
other games to educate children and adults about safety, Healthy Families offered sponge
bob tattoos and the Florida Poison Information Center distributed poison safety information.
The grand prize drawing of a year of free ice cream at Ben & Jerry’s was a coveted prize.
An effort was made to combine various safety messages with fun and games to draw parents
and children to our educational fair. The event was publicized through news releases,
print and broadcast PSAs, the Web site and direct mail fliers.
