Fire Safety

Working closely with Alachua County Fire & Rescue, Safe Kids developed a fire safety education campaign that was presented to 15,000 children in elementary schools throughout Alachua County. Safe Kids develops t-shirts for teachers to wear when we visit the school. This year 1,500 t-shirts were distributed to schools. In addition, Safe Kids develops two educational pieces for distribution to the children. This includes a home escape plan grid and instruction on how to create a home escape plan. Two contests were held, one for the best home-escape plan and one for the best fire safety poster. All the winners were recognized during a county commission meeting and a luncheon with the fire chief. In addition, three events were held at area McDonald’s to further promote the contests and the fire safety message. This campaign’s tremendous success was made evident when two children saved their lives and the life of their mother when their home caught on fire. As a result of what they learned from our program, these children had practiced a home escape plan with their mother and knew to get out of the home quickly.
